Description Hot arid ESR with deep loamy and clayey mixed red and balck soils, low to medium AWC and LGP  60-90 days.

Agroclimatic Characterization

Trend analysis of long term rainfall data (1966-2016) at ARS, Ananthapuramu has revealed that, there is a significant increasing trend in the rainfall (Z=1.70 @ P=0.1) and rainy days (Z=1.85 @ P=0.1) during the month of August

Crop Weather Relationship

1. Crop coefficients for initial, vegetative, mid and late growth stages were developed in groundnut under different sowing windows. These crop coefficients were utilized for scheduling of protective irrigation to kharif groundnut by the Department of Agriculture, Anantapur district for mitigating the prolonged dry spell situation in the year 2016. 2.Anantapur center has developed crop weather calendar (CWC) for groundnut by analysing long term crop and weather data generated under AICRPAM. Govt. of Andhra Pradesh, utilized the CWC along with mandal-wise crop water requirement and water balance calculations for developing "Drought management information system" in groundnut and other major rainfed crops of the state. 3.Assessing the impact of duration of dry spells on groundnut at Anantapur revealed that dry spell of more than 15 days during pod filling reduced the yield by about 65 to 75 percent under rainfed conditions.

Crop Growth Modelling

Regression models developed for predicting phenology of groundnut using GDD were validated at Anantapur. The models predicted flowering, pod initiation (<1 day error) and maturity (3-5 days error) accurately under all dates of sowing.

Crop Pest Weather Relationship

1. Rainfall based prediction equation for the emergence of red hairy caterpillar in groundnut was developed. The emergence of moths of red hairy caterpillar were found to be positively related with rainfall during June to September. 2. Studies on relationship between weather and groundnut leaf miner at Anantapur indicated that maximum temperature of more than 330 C, afternoon relative humidity less than 40 percent were favourable for incidence of groundnut leaf miner. The most significant weather factors affecting leaf miner infestation were identified using Stepwise backward and forward regression analysis with 3 and 7 days lead period. 3. Step-wise regression equations were developed for studying the relationship between weather parameters and incidence of leaf miner on groundnut using pooled data during 2012-16. The analysis revealed that weather observed during 7 day lead period has shown significant association with the disease development.
