Achievements

  • Daily weather data of 20 years had been computerised and brought out as a data base running into four volumes. Water availabillty periods for bangalore region were determined using water balance for the period 1975-96.

  • Studies on rainfall characterization showed an increase in average annual rainfall after 1990. Quantum of June rains increased and July rains decreased after 1990 compared to the period 1972-1990. The impact of these changes on agriculture is under study.

  • Fingermillet crop was raised each year during 1992-1997. Phenology, biomass, leaf area index, partitioning of dry matter, yield attributes, soil moisture were all recorded. Water balance was computed and crop coefficients were derived for different growth stages. Water requirement during different growth stages was computed.

  • Groundnut crop was raised during the period 1992-1997 and similar observations like those in fingermillet were recorded. The data generated provides database for application of PNUTGRO model which is proposed to be used in the coming seasons.

  • A multiple linear regression between grain yield of fingermillet with cumulative water used, growing degree days and water requirement satisfaction index was developed which explained about 67 per cent variability in yields. Application of the model with independent data set for 1996 and gave yield predictions to an accuracy of about 95 per cent.
